Last year, we volunteered at the Food Bank with a group of attorneys and related persons, as part of the Fresno County Young Lawyers Association. It was a fun and rewarding experience.

We were looking forward to volunteering again this year, but…

This message was received in our email boxes this morning. (I wrote back and asked for permission to use the information on the blog.)

I must regrettably notify everyone that the FCYLA Volunteer Food Day at the Community Food Bank tomorrow has been cancelled. It was not due to lack of willing volunteers. On behalf of the FCBA and the FCYLA, I would like to thank all the wonderful volunteers who stepped forward to assemble food boxes. However, there is no food on the Food Bank shelves to put in the boxes.

Last season, the Community Food Bank provided 40,000 meal boxes for families in need. Due to budget constraints, the food bank can only provide for 13,000 families this year.

The Food Bank will be preparing boxes for Christmas as well.

The deadline to donate food will be extended to mid-December. You can donate food for a meal box, and bring it to one of the same locations collecting Coats for Kids.

This is a major bummer. From what I can tell, in this economy there is an even greater need for our local Food Bank.

Please consider making your donation to the Community Food Bank at one of the following places:

To fill one Holiday Meal Box, the Community Food Bank needs the following items:

1 can of Cranberry Sauce
1 box/bag of Stuffing
1 packet/can of Gravy
2 pound bag of Rice
2 pound bag Pinto Beans
1 box Instant Potato Flakes
2 boxes Macaroni and Cheese
2 cans of Green Beans
2 can of Fruit
1 box of Cake Mix

The email we received ended with this:

Don’t feel like grocery shopping? For a $15 tax-deductible donation, you can provide a family of six people with a holiday meal.

Send your donations directly to the Community Food Bank at 3403 E. Central Avenue, Fresno, CA 93725.

For more information, contact them at (559) 237-FOOD, or at www.communityfoodbank.net.

No one should ever have to go hungry, but during the holidays, when the rest of us are being thankful for all that we have received, it seems even more terrible that there should be families out there going without.

Please donate something today.
